The answer to this question depends on the religion you are talking about. For a lot of people, Buddhism itself is not a religion but a philosophy. The same goes for Taoism and Shinto.
And, for those, there is no "God" but a way to go through life with respect to things such as nature and other living creatures.
But, either way, Buddhism and Shintoism shaped Japan in the ways that Catholicism and Christianity shaped America.
The difference between the Christian God and the Japanese god is that the Christian God is the only God. There is no Japanese god. The Christian God is real and the Japanese God is fake.
