Kuchipudi originated from Kuchelapuram (Kuchipudi), Andhra Pradesh. It originated from the male brahmins of the Bhakthi Movement during the 15th century. Kuchipudi has its first roots from the Bhagavata Mela. Other male brahmins moved to Melattur and named themselves "Melattur Bhagavata Mela" an claims to be the original Bhagavata Mela. The Melattur B.M. uses Bharatanatyam as their medium of dance. Kuchipudi before was a dance theatre, with only men doing all the characters.
