The Prime Minister is currently Justin Trudeau and he leads the Liberal Party of Canada.
in Canada provinces are lead by premiers and the nation is lead by a prime minister
To run for the position of Prime Minister of Canada, you need to be a member of a political party, have support from party members, and be chosen as the party leader. Once selected, the leader campaigns nationwide for the party in general elections, aiming to secure the most seats in the House of Commons. If successful, the leader can become the Prime Minister if their party forms a majority government or is able to form a coalition with other parties.

The Prime Minister serves as long as his party is in power, whether it be as a single party or as part of a coalition. The Prime Minister stops serving when they step down, or he loses the ability to lead the government.
The Conservative party, led by Stephen Harper.
Jean Charest has never been the prime minister of Canada. He ran for the position in the election of 1997, and brought the PCs back to national party status. He left Federal politics to lead the Liberal party of Quebec, and eventually became Premier of Quebec on 2003 June 6.
One does not technically "run for Prime Minister". The leader of the party that gains the most seats in the House normally becomes Prime Minister. The current Federal party leaders are:Stephen Harper (Conservative Party)Stephane Dion (Liberal Party)Jack Layton (New Democratic Party)Elizabeth May (Green Party)Gilles Duceppe (Bloc Quebecois)**The Bloc Quebecois does not field candidates outside of Quebec. Although theoretically possible for him to become Prime Minister, the minority government that would have to be involved would be so mathematically and demographically unrepresentative that it would almost certainly be quashed by a Coalition Government involving other parties.
