Oliver Cromwell was a key figure in English history. He overthrew the monarchy and ruled as a dictator briefly in 1653. He was an excellent general and leader of men.
Temporarily, there was no monarchy. However, the leadership of Cromwell did not endure and the monarchy was reinstated, I believe with certain limitations.
