After the falling out with Agamemnon (who took Achilles' concubine after his had to be returned to the Trojans), and Achilles' subsequent refusal to enter the battle, the Greeks didn't win a single engagement. The Greeks had been beaten back to their ships, which were in danger of being destroyed (which would leave the Greeks at the mercy of the Trojans), so Patroclus, his longtime friend and companion, convinced Achilles to let him wear Achilles' armor and lead the Myrmidons into battle. Achilles agreed, but ordered Patroclus to break off the attack once the ships were no longer in danger. But in the heat of battle, Patroclus ignored the command and he fought the Tojans back to the city gates where he was killed by Hector (who assumed he was fighting Achilles). He had killed 53 Trojans that day. Achilles, in anger, both at Hector and himself, Achilles challenged the Trojan prince to single combat, which Achilles won and then continued to lead the Myrmidons and the Achaeans to victory, ultimately dying at the hand of Paris. After the King and Achilles decided they couldn't settle their arguement, one of Achilles's closest friends stole his armor and rode into battle pretending to be Achilles. After he was killed in battle, Achilles felt he needed to avenge his fallen friend.

Agamemnon refused and Apollo sent a deadly plague amongst the Greeks. The prophet Calchas, determined the source of the troubles but would not speak unless Achilles vowed to protect him. Achilles did so and Calchas, of course declared that Chryseis must be returned to her father. Agamemnon did as he was told, but then commanded that Achilles' battle prize Briseis be brought to replace Chryseis. Angry at the dishonor of having his slave and glory taken away (He later mentions that he loves Briseis, his own slave). With the urging of his mother Thetis, Achilles refused to fight or lead his troops alongside the other Greek forces. At this same time, burning with rage over Agamemnon's theft, Achilles prayed to Thetis to convince Zeus to help the Trojans gain ground in the war, so that he may regain his honor. Zeus answered his prayers and the Trojan forces pushed the Greeks back to the beaches and started setting their ships ablaze. However, Achilles had still refused to do battle. Even after Agamemnon had sent three chieftains, Odysseus, Phoenix, and Ajax to offer him back Briseis and other gifts. As the Trojans started slaughtering the Greeks, Patroclus, took the armor of Achilles without Achilles or anyone else knowing and led the Myrmidons into battle. He pushed back the Trojans almost all the way to the city's walls, he would have attacked Troy if he had not been killed by Hector. Enraged over the death of Patroclus, Achilles ended his refusal to fight and took to the battlefield killing many men in his rage but the whole time he was only seeking out Hector. Achilles even engaged in battle with the river god Scamadar who became angry that Achilles was damming his waters with all the men he killed. The god tried to drown Achilles but was restrained by Hera and Hephaestus. Zeus himself took note of Achilles' rage and sent the gods to restrain him so that he would not go on to sack Troy itself, seeming to show that the unhindered rage of Achilles could defy fate itself because Troy was not destined to be destroyed just yet. As Achilles began to sack Troy Paris, still being in the city had shot an arrow at Achilles, which struck him directly in his heel, the only part of his whole body that could be compromised. It was at that moment when the great Achilles fell in battle.

How did Patroclus die?
As Achilles, leader of the Myrmidon armies, continued to sulk over his mistreatment by Agamemnon by withdrawing his troops from the assault on Troy, the Achaean (Greek) army suffered severe setbacks at the hands of Trojan defenders under Hector. Patroclos, Achilles' best friend and servant, pleads with Achilles to allow him to wear Achilles' armour and lead the Myrmidons into battle, so as to inspire the Greeks and put fear into the enemy through this deception. Achilles agrees, but only on condition that Patroclos limit his efforts to staving off the attack and not to puruse the enemy any further. Patroclos battles well, and the Achaeans achieve some success, however Patroclos disregards his promise to Achilles and proceeds to give chase to the Trojans until Hector confronts Patroclos, and slays him in the belief that it is Achilles. This becomes the turning point in the epic, where Achilles sets aside his petty quarrel with Agamemnon and returns to battle to take vengeance upon Hector.
