∙ 9y agoAmerican diplomats, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry were sent to France on a diplomatic mission that turned into the XYZ Affair. Although the delegation was headed by Pinckney, it should be noted that while Pinckney and Marshall stormed off in indignation after the bribery attempt, Gerry remained in France unofficially to continue negotiations. His subsequent meetings with Talleyrand led to the actual breakthrough that ended the hostilities and prevented war.
