The first nuclear bomb used in combat was the MK-I Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima August 6, 1945. It was built by the US.

However its inventor was Leo Szilard in 1933 in London 12 years earlier.

Atomic bombs.

The names, types, and usage of the first 3 bombs built (in order of usage) were:

  1. Gadget, plutonium implosion assembly, Trinity tower test device.
  2. Little Boy, 80% enriched uranium gun assembly, Hiroshima combat airburst.
  3. Fat Man, plutonium implosion assembly, Nagasaki combat airburst.

A fourth bomb was built but did not arrive in San Francisco for air shipment to Tinnian until 4 days after the war ended. It never got a name and was returned to Los Alamos for disassembly.

By the end of the summer of 1946 Crossroads test series, we had built 9 bombs and detonated 5 of those. The 2 Crossroads devices were just named Able & Baker, both were plutonium implosion assembly devices. Able was airdropped, Baker was a shallow underwater burst.

The United States was the first country to develop and use nuclear weapons, but the development was the combined work of numerous physicists, engineers and other scientists, as well as military figures.
Many people consider Robert Oppenheimer to be the 'Father of the Atomic Bomb', but while he did oversee the massive effort to make the first A-bomb, he did not invent it, or do it alone.

The weapon was designed by a team at the Kurchatov Institute (at the time officially known as "Laboratory # 2") using copies of the plans of the American MK-III Fatman bomb stolen by the spies Klaus Fuchs, Ted Hall, and David Greenglass.
The same team had also independently designed an improved atomic bomb at the same time, but Beria would not let them test their design until after the one based on the stolen plans was tested and verified to operate as well as the American atomic bomb.
