In the UK, parliament constists of the House of Commons (where MP's sit) and the House of Lords (where Lords and CofE Bishops sit). In Canada the upper house is called the senate. In the Republic of Ireland the lower house is called the Dail (where TD's sit) and the Senate is the upper house. In Germany the Bundestag is the lower house and the Bundesrat is the upper house.

Parliamentary committtees are generally made up of the members from the House of Parliament to which they belong. However, Parliaments that have two Houses can create a joint committtee made up of representatives from both Houses. Members of the committtee are generally representative of the various political persuasions within the House. The purpose of a committtee is to investigate or enquire into matters and to report results back to the House.
