Many groups objected to the including some religious groups. Christian Pacifists opposed World War I because their ideology considers all wars as evil. They believe Jesus himself was a pacifist and urged his followers to do so as well.

A variety of people opposed World War 1 for philosophical and religious reasons, and they were collectively known as conscientious objectors. Some were excused from military service for this reason. Interesting fact: Sergeant Alvin York had tried for conscientious objector status, but he was refused because his church did not meet the criteria. York then reluctantly entered the US Army and later won the Congressional Medal of Honor.
