Canada was privately occupied by natives, the French and British both fought for power over Canada, with wins in both sides. In the end the British took control before Canada gained it's independence in 1867 known as confederation. The name Canada is derived from it's natives who had called one of it's areas "Kanata"
The control of Canada is a long history. In the simplest way, here it is:
The French began colonizing the area now known as Nova Scotia in 1605, and Québec in 1608, and called it "La Nouvelle-France" (New France). It was divided into two administrative areas: Québec and Acadia.
Through war, Britain acquired part of Acadia and created Nova Scotia. Following the defeat of France in the Seven Years War (a.k.a. French and Indian War), the King of France ceded almost all of New France to Britain in the Treaty of Paris (1763).
Two centuries later (approx) the British came and won the land after the war, they then called it "The Dominion of Canada"
In 1791, Britain divided Québec into two separate colonies, Upper Canada and Lower Canada. (Upper Canada eventually became Ontario, and Lower Canada eventually became Québec. and the Maritimes.)
During the period 1864-1867, Canadian politicians discussed uniting several of the colonies. had signed the treaty Further discussions with the British government resulted in the British North America Act, which created Canada as an independent nation. Canada was the first country to be created by legislation.
So that's just a survey of it all. However, this does not address the fact that the First Nations possessed the land originally.
the French were the first to own the land, the British owned the "Dominion of Canada", and "Canada" was only controlled by Canadians.
Canada's name has always been "Canada," nothing more and nothing less. The word "dominion" was never part of Canada's name. It was merely a term of description.
Canada is a free country, therefore, nobody owns it.
Prior to Confederation, what is now Canada was a collection of British colonies and territories.
France had a number of colonies in Canada from 1534 to 1763. However, Great Britain actually owned Canada from 1763 until Canada's independence in 1867.
