Various tribes lived in New Mexico for thousands of years, although no one tribe claimed all the state. Several pueblo-dwelling tribes are still in the same places as they were before Columbus was in diapers.

The first European descendants to claim New Mexico were Don Juan de Onate and his men. Many of them settled here and their descendants still live here. Mexico and Texas both claimed parts of New Mexico although neither really controlled the territory.
