No one owned the United States. The Cold War began after WW2 when Germany was divided between the allies and the Russians. Berlin was divided into 4 sections. Three sections were controlled by the allies and one by the Soviet's. The Russians built the Berlin Wall to stop people from going into West Germany while they controlled East Germany. This created a dividing line and a checkpoint controlled by NATO forces on the West and the Russians on East. The standoff between the two sides was named the Cold War by Winston Churchill in a speech. This continued until 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down.
