During the moghul rule of Akbar, Jehangir, and Shahjehan, hindus did live in comparative peace. I also do not claim that all converts to Islam were because of persecution. Many converted because of the reverance to Sufi saints.
Christianity persecuted Hinduism in certain areas, particularly, the Portugese in Goa. While most converts to Islam were from the lower strata, the Portugese attacked the brahmins. Their thinking was that if brahmin will could be broken, then the other people would soon follow. Half the population of Goa is christian. In the modern times, the method of inducing coversion has changed. Now it is provision of education, health facilties, etc. The conversions are still going on with the help of money from developed countries. But the end result of conversion is strife only.
