John Rolfe was the leader of the colony, and the husband of Pocahontas. Commonly (largely because of his memoirs and Disney) John Smith is confused with this, although it is unlikely that Smith ever knew Pocahontas. He was however a military Captain in the colony.

King James I had outlined the members of the Council to govern the settlement in the sealed orders which left London with the colonists in 1606.

Those named for the initial Council were:

  • Edward Maria Wingfield, first President of the Council at Jamestown
  • John Ratcliffe, Captain of the Discovery, second President of the Council
  • John Smith, third President of the Council, and author of many books from the period.
  • George Percy, later twice president of the council
  • Bartholomew Gosnold, Captain of the Godspeed
  • Christopher Newport, Captain of the Susan Constant, later of the Sea Venture
  • George Kendall
  • John Martin (later founder of Martin's Brandon Plantation)

What did john smith do for people in the Jamestown colony?

During his 2 years in Jamestown he is responsible for the survival of the colony. As the colony's president from 1608-1609 he ruled fairly, but was firm. Regardless of rank everyone was expected to work for the common good. His bold leadership, military experience, and determination gave a measure of discipline to the dying dissolute colonists; his working with the Native Americans prevented starvation and his dispersal of the colony from unhealthy Jamestown lowered the Death Rate. In October of 1609 he was wounded by a gunpowder explosion and returned to England. After his return to England he promoted and wrote about the Americas and this contributed to people wanting to come to the America's.

What happened to Jamestown in 1676?

It was the first "sucessful colony". It was a royal colony English in fact. It was not as sucessful as it was given credit for...the people wanted gold and wanted to be rich from gold that they thought was in the 'new world'. There was no gold but they looked for it so much that they (population of Jamestown was mostly all men) did not plant or build good houses. They made bad relations with the Indians they always wanted help and their food since the people of Jamestown had none, there was a drought, and it was in a swamp in present day Virginia which was bad land and had mosquitoes and bad water that they had to drink. The disease spread, many died the first winter and new people had to come over. Eventually after about 3 years a few women came to Jamestown.
