Starting at 1 Kings 2:1, it tells of King David's last conversations: 1 Kings 2:10,11: 'Then David lay down with his forefathers and was buried in the City of David. Solomon was 20 years old when he took the throne. 1st Kings 11:42 "And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel [was] forty years. He died at age 60.
Saul reigned for forty years.
The number 40 must be something special to the authors of the Bible since it occurs several times. The Flood of Noah lasted for forty days. Moses ran away to Midian at the age of forty and stayed in Midian for forty years. He spent forty days on Mount Sinai, getting the Commandments. After escaping Egypt, the Israelites spent forty years wandering in the desert. The spies from that Exodus spent forty days in Canaan. Ninevah was allowed forty days to repent (Jonah 3). Elijah and Jesus both fasted for forty days. Jesus spent forty days on earth after the resurrecton. Israel's Judges judged for forty-year terms. Kings Saul, David and Solomon each reigned for forty years.
David was 30 years old when he began to reign and it was only after he had reigned in Judah for seven and a half years that he then reigned for a furthur 33 years "over all Israel and Judah" :- 2Sa 5:4-5 KJV David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. I kings 2.11 says, " The period that david reigned over israel was forty years, seven years in Hebron, and in Jerusalem , he reigned thirty three years" So adding these years together, i get a total of 80 years. I believed that the period of david's reign was 80 years.
The old testament
No-one killed David: he died of old age:-1Ch 29:26-28 KJV Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. (v.27) And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem. (v.28) And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
