^^^^^North Americans don't speak Hindi and Hindus acually speak many different languages. Hindi is acually spoken in Northern and Central India, by many people with differnent religions and backgrounds.

Sanskrit is no longer spoken widely today. However, almost all modern Indian languages and a few South-East Asian languages have a fair influence of Sanskrit on their vocabulary. In some cases, the formal or 'pure' forms of these languages are very heavily Sanskritized. Thus in some ways, Sanskrit is to Indian languages as Latin is to the Romance languages of Europe.

All Hindu religious rituals are still accompanied by chanting in Vedic Sanskrit. Further the learning of the Vedas, the ancient Hindu scriptures, albeit pursued by few today, largely involves an oral tradition.

Sanskrit is also taught in some schools as an optional language in addition to English and Hindi (the largest spoken language in India).

There is a village named Mattur in Karnataka, India where the locals converse in Sanskrit. This is a prominent example among attempts to revive Sanskrit as a spoken language.
