- Edward the Confessor, old king of England who died after promising the throne to both the following:
- Harold Godwinson, an English noble who took the throne first, and:
- William of Normandy, also known as William the Conqueror, a French duke who invaded England and defeated Harold at The Battle of Hastings.
Both 2. and 3. insisted that Edward had promised the throne to them.
