The order of succession for Speaker of the House is extensive. Next would be the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, followed by the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury. In the next grouping would come the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, the Secretary of the Interior, and secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce and Labor. Following this group would be the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Secretary of Transportation, Secretary of Energy, Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Veterans' Affairs.
The next in line to assume the presidency following the Speaker of the House is the President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate. That position is currently held by Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia.
