Merchants traded on the silk road, that is how all of the other cultures got what they needed. Say China had silk and Japan had rice, those two cultures would trade to get what they needed.
Pretty much all who existed from Western Europe to the far East Asia traded on the silk road. Also, the Muslims played a huge role in what was brought from Asia to Europe. They controlled the middle route, so merchants had to cooperate with them in order to reach and deal with goods from the other end.
