Buchanan ran as a Democrat which party had a national appeal and had been strong in the South with Jackson , Polk and Taylor as a counter against northern abolitionists. Furthermore, Buchanan was from the border state of Pennsylvania,

had family ties in Virginia and was not suspected of being antislavery, so carried the South, the border states and California.
