David Neligan born Templeglantine Co Limerick in 1899 and died in 1983. He joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police D.M.P. in 1918 ands joined the G Division in 1918. This Division was the political police of the Crown in Dublin. In May 1921 he was sworn into the British Secret Service from which he was pensioned-off and transferred back to the police, this time the Royal Irish Constabulary R.I.C. at the time of the treaty between Ireland and England. Of note is that for virtually all of this time he was Michael Collin's major spy! He later served as Director of Intelligence in the National Army during the civil war and later served in the Irish police - Garda Siochana- as head of Special Branch. The British never uncovered him or even realised he was a spy until he published his book "The spy in the Castle" - in fact he even had a full pension from them, which they did not withdraw from him even when they finally realised what he had been. As was said the British did not hold grudges whereas his own did.

Was Michael Collins married?

No. He was engaged to Catherine Brigid "Kitty" Kiernan (1892 -- 24 July 1945) and due to be married in a double wedding ceremony in November 1922. Kitty was a very popular and independently minded young lady and very attractive into the bargain. Mick Collins and one of his best, if not his best, friends, Harry Boland, shared a love interest in Kitty. It was Michael that won her heart. Tragically, 3 months before they were to be Married, Mick was gunned down in an Anti-Treaty IRA ambush at a place called Béal na Bláth on 21 August 1922. There were many ifs and buts that fateful day that conspired against Mick. If only one factor had been different, he would have survived the day and could have conceivably lived a happy and fruitful life with his sweetheart and his other love, Ireland. But his incredible good luck up until that day ran out in an equally incredible manner. Mick and Kitty wrote to each other on an almost daily basis and there survives a collection of the letters. There is a book entitled "In Great Haste" by Leon O'Broin that the letters are the subject of. Many of the letters went on display in a museum or library in Cork around the turn of the millennium. They apparently give reviewers an insight into the characters of Kitty and Mick and the love they had for each other. There is also an historical interest in the letters as they give an insight into the political background at the time of the signing of the treaty and what Mick's and Kitty's feelings were. Unfortunately, I have not read the book or had a chance to review the letters. I have only read of references to them.
