On May 24, 1822, the rest of Ecuador gained its independence after Antonio José de Sucre defeated the Spanish Royalist forces at the Battle of Pichincha after the city of Santiago de Guayaquil gained its independence on October 9, 1820. Following the battle Ecuador joined Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Columbia joining modern day Venezuela and Columbia, only to become a republic in 1830. Since, there has been a long-simmering dispute between Ecuador and Peru, which ultimately led to fighting between the two countries; first a border skirmish in January--February 1981 known as the Paquisha Incident. A full-scale war broke out between the two countries in January 1995.
