Following the battle Ecuador joined Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Columbia joining modern day Venezuela and Columbia, only to become a republic in 1830. Since, there have been a successive list of leaders whom had been deposed. In the 1860's, Gabriel Garcia Moreno unified the country with the help of the Roman Catholic Church. in 1895, a Liberal Revolution took place when Don José Eloy Alfaro Delgado reduced the power of the clergy. Since, there has been a long-simmering dispute between Ecuador and Peru, which ultimately led to fighting between the two countries; first a border skirmish in January--February 1981 known as the Paquisha Incident. A full-scale war broke out between the two countries in January 1995. The President of Ecuador, Sixto Alfonso Durán-Ballén Cordovez (born July 14, 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, swore he would not give up a centimeter of land to Peru. Under his leadership, rose up a nationalistic view against Peru. In 1998, the two countries made peace,
