Eleazar ben Judah was most likely born in Mainz in 1176. He died at Worms in 1238.
In November- December of 1196, two crusaders entered his house at night, killing his wife Dulcina, his two daughters Belat and Hannah, and his son Jacob. He was badly wounded but escaped alive. Years before, during the Second Crusade, he and other Jews were forced to flee town. The Crusades had a profound effect on his life. Eleazar wondered if his people would survive in Europe. Despite all his suffering due to the facts that he was a Jew, he continued to preach love for all humanity as a Jewish leader in the city of Worms, a city south of Mainz.
