After the original settler Alfred Bussell left Ellensbrook, his sister Edith established Ellensbrook Farm Home for Aboriginal Children. The local Nyungar people could work on the property for food and shelter.

By the 1920s sand drift had overtaken much of the land and by the 1940s the homestead was unoccupied and derelict. In 1950 Lennox Terry grandson of Alf and Ellen bought the property and began to improve it, however was unable to afford this and sold Ellensbrook in 1956.
