Kuniaki Koiso, (Koiso, was his family name) was Prime Minister, immediately after Tojo stepped down. In 1945, Koiso was arrested and tried for war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the far east, for war crimes. He was convicted as a "Class A" war criminal, and given a Life Sentence in prison. He died in Sugamo Prison, in 1950.

After Koiso was arrested, Kantaro Suzuki then assumed the role of Japan's Prime Minister. Suzuki, too was arrested and tried for war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the far east, for war crimes.

After Suzuki was arrested, HIH Prince Naruhiko of Higashikuni, (the only member of the Japanese Imperial family to head a cabinet) assumed the role of Prime Minister, in August of 1945. He then resigned in October of 1945, after a dispute over the repeal of the 1925 Peace Preservation Law.

After HIH Prince Naruhiko resigned, Kijuro Shidehara (Shidehara, was his family name), was appointed Prime Minister. Shidehara was the first Post WWII Prime Minister of Japan.

Shigeru Yoshida, (Yoshida, was his family name) was then elected in 1947, as Prime Minister and re-elected in 1949. He was elected for a total of 5 terms, as Prime Minister through December 1954.
