She was by some standards the second-ever female monarch of Great Britain, crowned in 1558, who held the throne for 44 years and never married. Her name is applied to the Elizabethan Period of English history. She was the third child of King Henry VIII, from his marriage to Anne Boleyn, and succeeded her Roman Catholic half-sister Mary, who was queen from 1553 to 1558.

Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and Her Other Realms and Territories. Many people refer to her as "The Queen of England" - this is incorrect as the title "Queen (or King) of England" has not existed for over 300 years.

It's like calling Barack Obama "The President of Illinois."

I've added some related links with images of Elizabeth I for you. I included the famous "Darnley Portrait" held at the National Portrait Gallery in London, a portait of her currently on view in the U.S. National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., and a depiction of her in the charter of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Ashbourne.

Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch of Britain and its Commonwealth. She assumed the throne in 1952 upon the death of her father, George VI. At her birth, she was third in line to the throne, but after the abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII, her father assumed the throne.
