They weren't burned by the church per se, rather they were burned by people who claimed to be Christian, and were in fact leaders of the physical representation of Christ's Church. The True Church is spiritual in nature, therefore does not kill temporal beings or spiritual ones. It is made up of believers who strive to follow God's commandments through faith in Christ, Who is Himself opposed to killing of any kind. Those who have ears, let them hear! Amen.
