He even opposed giving freedom to India so that the majesty of Victorian rule may continue uninterrupted. Whatever grandeur Victorian literature and life produced was in him. He is considered a true representative of the richness of English Literature during that period. It should also be noted here that Thomas Hardy condemned titles such as Victorians, saying that such titles are a disparagement to poets and geniuses of that time.
