President Lincoln thought emancipation was justified as a military necessity to preserve the Union. "If the Proclamation of Emancipation was essentially a war measure, it had the desired effect of depriving the Confederacy of much of its valuable laboring force.

∙ 10y agoPresident Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. The document said as of January 1st, 1863 all of the slaves in the states who seceded would be forever free if those states did not rejoin the Union. The document didn't free slaves in the border states.
