You are probably referring to Amelia Earhart. During the 1920s, there were a number of women aviators who were setting records, but Amelia became the first woman aviator (or "aviatrix" as they were then called) to make a solo flight across the Atlantic, just like Charles Lindbergh had done in 1927. Amelia completed her transatlantic flight in May 1932. (She had been part of a three-person team that crossed the Atlantic in 1928, but this was her first successful solo trip.)

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to cross the Atlantic ocean solo.

This was Amelia Earhart. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in a Lockheed Vega 5b, taking off from Harbour Grace in Newfoundland on 20th May 1932. She landed in Culmore, in Co. Derry, Northern Ireland just over 14 hours later. For her feat, she was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the US Senate.

She did make a transatlantic flight with two male colleagues four years earlier, accompanying pilot Wilmer Stultz and engineer Louis Gordon on a flight from Newfoundland to Wales in the huge triple-engined Fokker F.VIIIb 'Friendship II' - however, at the time she held no instrument rating, and as most of the flight was at night-time she was just a passenger on the trip.

Earhart went missing on 2nd July 1937, whilst attempting to fly from California to Hawaii with her navigator and co-pilot Fred Noonan. Their 'plane, a twin-engined Lockheed Electra, disappeared somewhere near the Nukumaru islands South West of Hawaii. Neither they nor their aircraft have ever been recovered.

Why were slaves high demand in southern colonies?

The Southern colonies of the 13 American colonies were suited to large plantations that yielded cotton and tobacco. Both products were in high demand in Europe. Economy of scale created the most efficient way grow and harvest these crops. From the 1600's onward, slave traders provided the manpower required to field the plantations. They were inexpensive compared to paid American laborers, thus the demand was strong for imported slaves. The Portuguese and earlier, the Dutch dominated the slave triangle. Ships would leave Europe for West Africa with enough sought after products that could be used to buy slaves. These ships, then headed to the Western Hemisphere where the slaves were sold. In return these ships would be laden with colonial goods and farm products and sail back to Europe.
