Answer:

His son, Rehoboam, became king. However, the kingdom split into two kingdoms or houses, because Rehoboam refused to cancel the heavy taxation his father, Solomon, had leveled on the people to finance to building of the Temple.

The Temple was completed, so the ten tribes of Israel under Ephraim and Manasseh went their own way, and Jeroboam became the king of Israel while Rehoboam ruled over the Jews (Judah) along with the tribes of Benjamin, the Levite priests and token remnants of other tribes. (see I Kings 12)

..

No, that is not true. The name of the original contributor has been deleted for some reason. Read 1 Kings 12 for yourself, but with a lot of salt. Not mentioned there is that Solomon died in 931 BC.

Rehoboam was taken to Shechem to be anointed the next King of Israel. He was asked a question and gave a stupid answer. As a result, he was rejected and Jeroboam was anointed King instead. The tribes of Judah and Benjamin seceded from Israel along with some of the Levites and founded the Kingdom of Judah in Jerusalem and became known as Jews. They were conquered by Egypt and then by Babylon and returned to slavery. During this slavery, they invented their new religion of Judaism, largely based upon the Babylonian religion. The remaining Israelites were the guardians of the ancient Torah and the ancient religion and were called guardians, or "Samaritans," and the land in which they lived was named after them. There is an inconsistency in I Kings. The Jews who wrote it keep calling Rehoboam "the King." He was only ever the king of Judah. DNA testing proves that on their patrilineal DNA, the eight hundred or so Samaritans still surviving in the Holy Land are indistinguishable from Jews. This is to be expected as they married non-Israelite women. The religion passed to children from their father. For Jews and other Babylonians, the religion passes from the mother.

Some publishers have inserted misleading headings in these passages. The Jews seceded from Israel. Israel did not secede from the Jews. Israel simply rejected Rehoboam. Mr. Netanyahu recently stated that he speaks for all Jews. Tens of thousands of Jews object strenuously to that claim and assert that using the name "Israel" for the country is blasphemous.
