King Richard the Lionheart was the king at the time of Robin Hood. He ruled England from 1189 to 1199. Robin Hood's story is often associated with King Richard's reign, though historical evidence regarding the existence of Robin Hood is sparse and mostly based on folklore.

"The king was King Edward"

Actually, it was King Richard I, the Lionhearted, who ruled until he was shot in the neck by a stray arrow in 1199. He was succeeded by his youngest brother, John, who was also known as "Softsword".

King John was the "Prince John" of the Robin Hood stories.

How long ago do people think robin hood existed?

The earliest sources of the Robin Hood legend are ballads earlier than 1450. They place Robin Hood in Yorkshire. In one of them King Edward is in Yorkshire and makes Robin Hood his yeoman. The only King Edward who was in Yorkshire before 1450 was Edward II, who was there in 1323. Among the King's servants in 1323 is listed a Robyn Hod. In my novel The Robin Hood Chronicles I assume that this Robyn Hod is the same as the Robin Hood of the ballads.

What was the family NAME of King Richard the Lion heart and King John who ruled during the time of the legendary Robin hood?

The Robin Hood stories are partly legend and there is some debate about whether Robin Hood is one person or an amalgamation of several historical characters. It is assumed that the King Richard in the Robin hood stories is "Richard Coeur de Leon" or Richard the Lionheart and his family name was Plantagenet. His younger brother John, succeeded him upon his death.
