Here is an incomplete list of officers who commanded Union Armies and/or Military Departments during the war. The list is not comprehensive by any means however, as the Union constantly reorganized its forces and shuffled commanders around. Some of these men commanded more than one army or department during the conflict. Brigadier General Irvin McDowell, Major General George B. McClellan, Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, Major General Joseph Hooker, Major General George G. Meade, Brigadier General Robert Anderson, Major General William S. Rosencrans, Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler, Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks, Maj. Gen. Edward Ord, Maj.Gen. John Pope, Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand, Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield, Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, Maj. Gen. Phillip Sheridan, Maj. Gen William T. Sherman, Brig. Gen. George Crook Other Noteworthy Union Generals were: Lietenant General Ulysses S. Grant, Maj. Gen Henry W. Halleck, Gen.-in-Chief Winfield Scott, Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday, Brig. Gen. George A. Custer, Brig. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren. Again this list is not nearly complete and there are many more who should be added, but I have only a couple of my references availble at the moment and a limited time to research them.

Jefferson Davis

The rest of his cabinet are names that mean nothing to history. There were some great talents, but never suitably deployed as a team.

Judah P. Benjamin was probably the most formidable, but he was moved between three jobs in three years.

If you've ever heard of Stephen Mallory or James A. Seddon, most people haven't.

As leaders, the public were more inclined to look to their Generals - Robert E. Lee being the most inspiring, Stonewall Jackson and John Hood both dramatic examples of Confederate mad-bravery, Joseph E. Johnston shrewd and careful but not Confederate enough for the ex-officer and would-be General-in-Chief, Jefferson Davis.

There were many leaders that led during the Civil War. For the North, there was Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman. For the South, there was Robert E. Lee, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. I hope this helps :)

Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States of America during the Civil War. Since he was president, he was also the Commander in Chief of the armed forces. There were many other people helping him to lead the country during this troubling time in American history, including generals in the army. However, President Lincoln was the man who led the Union.
