There was a Native American on the penny from 1859 to 1909, when Lincoln was put on it.

Prior to that, there was a brief (1856-58) coinage of cents with a flying eagle design.

From 1793 to 1858 the US made what are called Large cents, about the size of half-dollars. These carried various images of Miss Liberty.
