The story of Joseph in all probability is just that - a story. Many historians and archaeologists have tried to find links between the story of Joseph and information by Egyptian sources on the Exodus and the Pharaoh that ruled at the time, but without any succes. The Egyptians were great and detailed record-keepers, but no mention at all has ever been found of a viceroy called Joseph, nor of the ten plagues, nor of a whole population kept in slavery in Egypt, nor of a whole Egyptian army including the Pharaoh drowning in a freak flooding of the Red Sea. Nor is there any archaeological evidence that ever (litterally) has been dug up of what should have been a very extensive Jewish settlement in Egypt. Besides, Egypt never kept any large group of foreign people as slaves on their territory.

It is extremely likely that the "Exodus"- story was written much later with the aim of giving the various Jewish tribes a sense of common heritage and purpose, and to establish the 'divine' origin of Israel's laws. More of these semi-mythic stories on the origin of a people have been written in ancient history, and with the same purpose. Today, many historians think that the Jewish tribes lived a semi-nomadic life in Western Mesopotamia and gradually drifted west, finally settling in Palestine.

When was Joseph smith concered a prophet?

There is no official answer for when exactly Joseph Smith was considered a prophet. Some, citing the Jeremiah 1:5 ("...before thou camest forth from the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."), would consider Joseph Smith to have always been a prophet, and say that he was ordained to that position by God before his mortal birth. Others might consider Joseph Smith a prophet from the age of fourteen, when he received his first vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ, and learned that his mission was to restore true Christianity to the earth. Others might consider him a prophet from the time he received the plates and began translating the Book of Mormon. Others still could consider him a prophet from the day the Church was organized, April 6, 1830, or from the time that he was sustained as the president, prophet, seer, and revelator of the Church.
