Pompey was one of the giants of ancient Rome's military. He gained his military experience first under his father then under Sulla. Among his achievements were the mopping up of the Spartacus revolt, the adding of middle eastern territories to the empire, and the clearing the seas of pirates. He was the son-in-law of Julius Caesar and a member of the first triumvirate. When Caesar fell out with the senate, Pompey, was given command of the senatorial armies in the civil war. He left Italy for Greece where Caesar defeated him at Pharsalus in 48 BC despite being greatly outnumbered.
