As a child, Teddy was extremely sick suffering from severe Asthma and tone deafness. However, his parents never gave up on their mischievous hyperactive boy. T.R.'s father built him a weight set upstairs in the four-story brownstone home which helped build Teddy's strong physique. After getting in a fight with two other boys, Teddy's father hired a professional boxer to help him with his fighting skills even though Teddy never had any athletic ability.
