His name was Doris Miller (nicknamed Dorie) from Waco, TX, and a crewman aboard the battleship USS West Virginia. Miller was a mess cook, all that blacks were allowed to do aboard a USN ship at that time. Instead of running for cover as would have been the natural and understandable thing to do, Miller manned an anti-aircraft gun and shot down two Japanese planes.
