Miller was a mess cook, all that blacks were allowed to do aboard a USN ship at that time. Instead of running for cover as would have been the natural and understandable thing to do, Miller manned an anti-aircraft gun and shot down two Japanese planes.

Doris "Dorie" Miller was the famous black man from Pearl Harbor. He was a U.S. Navy sailor who displayed incredible bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
