∙ 9y agoFirst, it should be noted that Germany was divided back then, into East Germany (aligned with the Soviet Communists) and West Germany (aligned with Europe and "the West"). In East Germany, there were three presidents in 1960: Wilhelm Pieck's term ended in early September, and he was replaced by Johannes Dieckmann temporarily. Then, Walter Ulbricht assumed power in the middle of September and remained in the ofice of the president till 1973. Meanwhile, in West Germany, there was only one president in 1960--Heinrich Lubke, who served until he resigned in 1969.
