Unofficially because the Dictatorship was a republican office even though the power was given to one person.

∙ 13y agoNo one person ended the Roman Republic. The Republic collapsed in on itself due to the intransigent attitude of the group called the optimates. Augustus picked up the pieces and gave lip service to the Republican ideas, but in reality had all the power himself.
