The north had several Generals in Chief during the war. Winfield Scott, who had been General in Chief since 1839, and on active duty since 1808, age 75, was in the position when the war started. He was replaced by George B. McClellan in 1862. After McClellan was removed as General in Chief Lincoln and his Secretary of War, Stanton, exercised the authority of the position for a time, before Henry W. Halleck was brought to Washington from the west to take over. Halleck was a disappointment, so Ulysses Grant was given the job, and a promotion to three star Lieutenant General in 1864, the first Lieutenant General in the US Army since Washington. Grant made his headquarters in the field, with the Army of the Potomac, and oversaw the operations of that army.
The Army of the Potomac was one of several Union field armies, perhaps the most important. It fought against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the eastern theater of operations. This Army went through a succession of commanders, first Irvin McDowell, then McClellan, who commanded this army and was also General in Chief at the same time for a while. As Lincoln grew tired of McClellan's failure to do anything McClellan was removed as General in Chief, and after Antietam from command of the Army of the Potomac as well, which then went to Ambrose Burnside. Burnside was replaced by Joseph Hooker, who gave way to George G. Meade. Meade remained in command of this army to the end, but had Grant's HQ with him, looking over his shoulder, for the last year of the war.
