This disaster was hard to prevent or been avoided, in the 1950's there were no track circuits, and the main of the north island still used tablet signalling. the train driver had been flagged down by a passing motorists, and evidence found that the train driver had applied the brakes at least 200 metres before the bridge. today warning systems have been installed to prevent this type of disaster from occurring again.
