The first US Vice President was John Adams, who served as vice president for the two terms of President George Washington, from 1789 to 1797, and was subsequently elected as the second US President for one term from 1797 to 1801.

The reason that he became Vice President was not that he had any great interest in the position. Prior to the 12th Amendment in 1804, electoral votes were cast for President, and the candidate with the second-greatest number of votes became Vice President. So in the elections of 1788, 1792, 1796, and 1800, Adams was a candidate for President, coming in second twice, first once, and third to Jefferson and Burr in 1800.
