The Governor General of Canada is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen of Canada on the advice of the Prime Minister. The first Governor General of Canada's appointment predates Confederation (1867), having been appointed in 1861. His successor, the first appointed after Confederation, was appointed in 1869. The office is often considered to date back to 1627, with the first Governor of New France, and switched from being French to British in 1760.
