Jainism is a religion founded in India from about 367 BC by Rishabha. Jainism has around five million adherents world-wide. It does not believe in a creator nor a destroyer deity. Jainism is a faith based on [extreme] non violence called Ahimsa toward any living being, including the smallest of bugs and organisms. Jainists also believe in truth, honesty, poverty, and chastity, which are necessary to achieve enlightenment.. They believe too, that the universe has always been and will ever continue.

Jainism doesn't have a single founder. Jainism is most notable for its fundamental teaching of non-violence and ascetism. Jains do not kill anything, including insects. It is one of the world's oldest religions and it first emerged with any historical significance around the sixth century BCE. However, its beginnings are shrouded in mystery.

Jainism was already well established at the beginning of Buddhism. Some Western scholars name Mahavira (599-527 BCE) as its founder. However, the Jains believe their teachings to be eternal and not created. The first Jina is traditionally believed to have been a giant who lived millions of years ago. Rishabha is considered to be the founder of its current cycle of time. He was one of the illustrious people (or tirthankaras) who promoted Jainism. Parshvanatha is the earliest of these who can be dated with any certainty. He lived in the ninth century BCE.
