However, the Jains believe their teachings to be eternal and not created. The first Jina is traditionally believed to have been a giant who lived millions of years ago. Rishabha is considered to be the founder of its current cycle of time. He was one of the illustrious people (or tirthankaras) who promoted Jainism. Parshvanatha is the earliest of these who can be dated with any certainty. He lived in the ninth century BCE.
