King Alfred (reigned 871-899) is the only English king (or queen) called the Great. He styled himself King of the Anglo-Saxons (not England, as large parts of the country were under Viking rule).

Britain was transformed dramatically during the reign of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901, not that the Queen herself had a great deal to do with it, other than being Head of State at the time. The same might be said of the present Queen. Kings Edward I, Henrys V, VII & VIII & Queen Elizabeth I all have good claims. Elizabeth I - No one would have believed the daughter of Ann Boleyn would have defeated the greatest power on Earth at the time, Spain. I'm sure her father, Henry VIII, would have been very proud of her even though he had her mother executed and wanted a boy so much. And let's not forget how she barely escaped execution by her sister Mary I and the numerous assassination plots by the pope . She beat the odds, and they were all against her the day she was born.

There are a few contenders,

Alfred the Great drove the Vikings out of England and saved English culture

Athelstan the Glorious united all of England

Henry 2nd invented the legal system England still uses (innocent until proven guilty etc) and made the country fairer he also made England strong again after the anarchy.

Edward 1st, Edward 3rd and Henry 5th are the great warrior, hero kings

Charles 2nd healed England after the civil war and made the country strong again.

And George 6th got England and its people through WW2 as to who was best, well it kind of depends on your point of view. And of course there have also been many great queens.

Henry the VIII.

He founded the 'Church of England' and became Defender of the Faith in England, removing power from the papacy in the land and protesting against the Roman Catholic Church. (Protestant).

Answer:

The answer to this has to vary, according to whose historical standards are measuring it. For instance, the British answer, while arguing its own good and bad points from within, will still be different from a French, German, Russian, Egyptian, etc. answer.

National historical accounts have a way of both praising and condemning... all in the same breath.

The books of The Bible, on the other hand [to which this question is categorized]... were written before England became a nation. And while God has His own set of standards... it may be safely assumed that no king in the history of the world of any nationality ever measured up.
