King James I of England (who was also King James VI of Scotland) had written about the "Divine Right of Kings"- that the king's authority to rule came from God. He had numerous comflicts with his Parliament, mainly about raising money, and ruled for several periods without Parliament, so he could be said to be the last absolute monarch. His son, King Charles I attempted to carry on his father's ideas which lead to the English Civil War. This came to an end in Charles' defeat and execution for treason and England temporarily becoming a Republic under Oliver Cromwell.

∙ 14y agoQueen Elizabeth I. She died without children in 1603 so the crown passed to James VI of Scotland her cousin, which united the two crowns (although not politically the countries until the act of union in 1707).

∙ 14y agoThe last monarch of only England was Elizabeth I. In addition, if you do not want to count when the monarchs began to call themselves the monarch of Ireland it would be, Henry VII. However, monarchs were not titled king or queen of Great Britain until 1707 when Queen Anne passed the Act of Union, uniting England and Scotland. Up until that point they were known seperately as king and queen of England and Scotland. Example, King James was King James I of England and King James VI of Scotland.
