she was Mary Mackillop and she was canonized on the 17 of October 2010
Canonization means that the Pope makes a beautified person a saint. The answer above is partially correct; however, there is a little more to it. A lay person can only be canonized after they have performed three miracles and these miracles have to be documented by the Catholic Church. When that has been done, then this person will be canonized a Saint. I'm not sure, but I think one of the last people to be canonized a Saint was Mother Theresa. Canonization is the lengthy process by which a candidate's sainthood is verified by the Catholic Church. There has to be no doubt that the person is in Heaven.
Saint John Paul II, who died in 2005, is the most recent living saint. He was just canonized in 2014.
Yes, there have been many saints canonized in the last ten years. On May 12, 2013, in Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City, Pope Francis canonized 813 martyrs from the town of Otranto in Italy.
I am not sure what you mean by your question. Peter was the first pope and is a saint. However, he was declared a saint before the official canonization process was in place. That process was not firmly in place until the 12th century. The first person to be canonized a saint by a pope was Saint Udalric, Bishop of Augsburg, who was canonized by Pope John XV in 993. Some historians maintain that the first such canonization was that of Saint Swibert by Pope Leo III in 804. The last person to be named a saint by someone other that a pope was Walter of Pontoise who was canonized by Hugh de Boves, the Archbishop of Rouen in 1153. Thereafter, all canonizations were made through the Vatican and the pope.

Godric was one of the last saints to be informally canonized by local church officials before the formal process was in full force. Under the new procedure, only the pope can declare saints, removing that prerogative from local bishops
