John Rolfe was the leader of the colony, and the husband of Pocahontas. Commonly (largely because of his memoirs and Disney) John Smith is confused with this, although it is unlikely that Smith ever knew Pocahontas. He was however a military Captain in the colony.
King James I had outlined the members of the Council to govern the settlement in the sealed orders which left London with the colonists in 1606.
Those named for the initial Council were:
John Smith was the leader of Jamestown . I Think So .OK
The leader was john smith and lord Delaware but then john smith left to England so lord Delaware took over. I think so

The Roanoke Colony. It was the first, but mysteriously disappeared. The first one that actually survived was the James Town Colony. Also a good book about the Jamestown colony is Blood on the River. Loved it.
No other colony was able to harm Jamestown. They also had a good water source/route. Jamestown can contribute most of their success to John Smith and John Rolphe. John Smith made sure everybody worked. John Rolphe started tobacco planting.
in my opinion, he was a good leader because he made tobacco a big success, and helped the booming of the colony, so yeah, i think he was a good leader
The swampy land teemed with mosquitoes that carries malaria, a disease found in warm, humid climates. Jamestown also lacked good farmland and was surrounded by Native American settlements.
Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. The warm climate and fertile soil allowed large plantations to prosper. Plymouth provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. The cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing, and trade.
John Smith, a harsh and brutal ruler who forced the colonial "gentlemen" to work hard for the good of the colony, is generally said to have saved Jamestown.

During his 2 years in Jamestown he is responsible for the survival of the colony. As the colony's president from 1608-1609 he ruled fairly, but was firm. Regardless of rank everyone was expected to work for the common good. His bold leadership, military experience, and determination gave a measure of discipline to the dying dissolute colonists; his working with the Native Americans prevented starvation and his dispersal of the colony from unhealthy Jamestown lowered the Death Rate. In October of 1609 he was wounded by a gunpowder explosion and returned to England. After his return to England he promoted and wrote about the Americas and this contributed to people wanting to come to the America's.

It was the first "sucessful colony". It was a royal colony English in fact. It was not as sucessful as it was given credit for...the people wanted gold and wanted to be rich from gold that they thought was in the 'new world'. There was no gold but they looked for it so much that they (population of Jamestown was mostly all men) did not plant or build good houses. They made bad relations with the Indians they always wanted help and their food since the people of Jamestown had none, there was a drought, and it was in a swamp in present day Virginia which was bad land and had mosquitoes and bad water that they had to drink. The disease spread, many died the first winter and new people had to come over. Eventually after about 3 years a few women came to Jamestown.
