There were actually two Israelite legends who are both credited in The Bible with killing Goliath.

Millions of young children have been taught the famous story of David slaying the Philistine giant, Goliath, to guide them to understand the greatness of David and, perhaps, his God. This has all the hallmarks of legend because Saul already had intimate acquaintance with David as the king's armour bearer and then his personal musician (1 Samuel 16:21,23), yet when David told Saul that he would fight Goliath, Saul offered him his own personal armour but did not appear to recognise David (1 Samuel 17:30-39). Finally, after David had slain Goliath, Saul had the young warrior brought to him, but once again did not recognise David (1 Samuel 17:58).

A probably earlier biblical legend has Elhanan kill Goliath. The Hebrew Bible in English (JPS 1917 Edition) says (2 Samuel 21:19): And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. To avoid confusion, the King James (KJV) translation changes this to 'the brother of Goliath' [in italics to indicate that this was not an exact translation], but most other English translations of the Book of Samuel seem to have continued with the Hebrew Bible version. El-hanan, or Baal-hanan, was also the name of a Semitic deity, so it is just possible that the earliest myths placed the struggles with Goliath in the heavenly realm, with Goliath a spiritual opponent to be defeated endlessly.

In the Biblical story found in 1 Samuel 17, David a small boy kills a mighty giant of a warrior called Goliath. The army of Philistines prepared for battle against Israel and camped in the area between Socoh and Azekah. King Saul of Israel gathered his army and camped near the valley of Elah. For many days, Goliath, a giant among the Philistines challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to meet him in combat. David, a young shepherd boy, answered the challenge and went out to meet Goliath with a sling and a handful of stones. David defeats Goliath with a well-placed stone into Goliath's forehead. What reason did King Saul give David for why David could not go out to fight Goliath?

Saul didn't want David to go because he young and, in Saul's mind, inexperienced. In 1 Samuel 17:33 Saul says, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth."

What is the climax in David and goliath?

The Philistines collected for war against Israel at Socoh and then encamped in Ephes-dammim. As the battle lines of the Philistines and Saul's army faced each other across the valley, the gigantic warrior Goliath emerged from the Philistine camp and loudly challenged Israel to supply a man to fight him in single combat, the outcome to determine which army should become the servant of the other. Morning and evening, for 40 days, the army of Israel, in great fear, was subjected to these taunts. No Israelite soldier had the courage to accept the challenge. (1Sam. 17:1-11, 16) The young shepherd David, with God's spirit upon him, met Goliath's challenge.
